Spin around while your squad mates are talking and their voices track around your Atmos speaker array flawlessly. The beeps and whirs of your flying robot buddies, meanwhile, appear not just to your left, right or behind you, but slightly above your head - perfectly representing their position in the game world. If a couple of them are standing behind you talking, you can clearly define in Dolby Atmos precisely where each speaking character is - say, one at only a slight angle behind your left ear, while the other might be at a wider angle and further behind your right ear. The voices of your squad, for instance, provide a great glimpse into the difference Atmos sound can make. It’s immediately apparent, for instance, that the accuracy of sound placement introduced by the helicopter blades is not limited to cut scenes. And happily, once you finally get to the point where you take control of the game’s characters, things just sound better and better. The game’s opening cut scene shifts expectations of the Atmos soundtrack even higher, as helicopter blades spin not only above but around your head with remarkable accuracy and realism.

All of this remains beautifully cohesive too, despite the complexity of the mix, and sets your pulse racing with the sense of immersion it creates before you’ve fired a single shot. The opening score is mixed strongly for both height and rear channel effects, building gorgeous layers of bass, strings, drums and, right at the top (in physical height as well as treble terms), some beautifully portrayed choral work. Gears 5, though, reminds us in no uncertain terms just what an impact Dolby Atmos can have on a gaming experience.įrom the moment the opening credits kick in, Atmos starts to make its mark. In fact, neither the PS4 nor Nintendo Switch support it for gaming at all, and only a relative few Xbox titles - even triple A ones - have gone to the trouble of building Atmos into their gaming worlds (a full list of Dolby Atmos-toting Xbox titles can be found here). Dolby Atmos is pretty common in the film world now, but it’s still a pretty rare find on games.
